United Way

Oconee county schools are participating in raising funds for United Way. RBES will be doing so from October 10th to October 20th. Below are several ways in which you and your family can contribute to this great cause.

Chick-Fil-A Biscuits!!!!
Students can purchase a chicken biscuit during our fundraiser. Orders will be taken October 10th - 12th (forms will be sent home very soon!). The cost of each biscuit is $4.00. Biscuits will be delivered to your child's classroom on Friday, October 13th at 8:15.

Wear a hat to school/School Store Purchase!!!!
Students can pay $1.00 to wear a hat to school on Friday, October 13th. They can also buy a special RBES item from the School Store to support United Way the week of October 16th.   
DA$H Water!!!!!
Parents, if you'd like to contribute, you can purchase water during the DA$H for a $1.00

The week of September 25 - September 29

MATH
Block 1
NBT. 5:  Multiplication
OA.4:  Factors, multiples, prime, composite
*We will continue to review factors, multiples, prime and composite numbers every day.  
*Three different multiplication strategies were introduced today; distributive property, partial product, and area model.  We will work on multiplication all week using these different strategies.
*Our driving question this week is "What strategies can I use to solve multiplication?"

Block 2
OA.4:  Factors, multiples, prime, composite
*Factors were introduced to students today.  We will work in small groups all week to build a better understanding of this concept.  We will also introduce prime and composite numbers to the students this week.  
*Our driving questions this week are "What are factors?" and "What is the difference between a prime number and a composite number?".

SCIENCE
GSES4P3: Relationships between balanced and unbalanced forces, to include: - An investigation on the effects of balanced and unbalanced forces.
- An argument to support the claim that gravitational force affects the motion of an object.
- Simple machines (lever, pull, wedge, inclined plane, wheel and axle, and screw)
- Impact of simple machines on forces
*This week, we continue investigating the claim that gravitational forces affect the motion of an object.
*Our driving questions are "Why is the first hill of a roller coaster always the tallest?" and "How does force affect speed and motion?".

**BLOCK 2 ONLY**
SS4H4: The student will explain the causes, events, and results of the American Revolution.
- Trace the events that shaped the revolutionary movement in America, including the French and Indian War, British Imperial Policy that led to the 1765 Stamp Act, the slogan “no taxation without representation,” the activities of the Sons of Liberty, and the Boston Tea Party.
- Explain the writing of the Declaration of Independence; include who wrote it, how it was written, why it was necessary, and how it was a response to tyranny and the abuse of power.
- Describe the major events of the American Revolution and explain the factors leading to American victory and British defeat; include the Battles of Lexington and Concord, Saratoga, and Yorktown.
- Describe key individuals in the American Revolution with emphasis on King George III, George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Benedict Arnold, Patrick Henry, and John Adams
*We will discuss vocabulary and causes of the American Revolutionary war.
*Our driving question this week is "What events caused the American Revolutionary War?".

*We took our Unit #1 summative last week.  Scores will be entered into PowerSchool as soon as the update has been completed and I have been given the 'go-ahead' to enter grades!!!!
*We took our Unit #2 pre-test last week.  We are working in small groups this week on our standards, as well as doing partner work and independent work on IXL and Khan academy.

Volunteer Training and NOHS game on Friday

Volunteer Training
Did you miss one of the volunteer training sessions?  If so, we have one last make-up session on Monday, September 18th at 2:00.  The training will last 30 minutes.  Please be sure to attend if you are interested in volunteering this year at RBES!

NOHS Football Game
All RBES students have been invited to attend the NOHS home football game this Friday night, 9/15.  (A flyer came home in their Friday folders last week.)  If your child would like to go on the field before the game, they need to be on the track by 7:00.  This should be a fun night for all and a great way to support out community!

This week September 13 - September 15

I hope everyone was able to stay safe during the wind and rain from Hurricane Irma.  We are glad to be back and school and in our normal routine!!!

This post contains important information regarding STEAM night and other events that were affected by the hurricane, as well as other upcoming events.

iMoms Breakfast
 Rescheduled for October 16th.  
(Money will be transferred to the rescheduled iMoms breakfast.)

Book Fair and Grandparent Lunches:  
The book fair has been extended through next Tuesday, September 19th.  
Grandparent lunches will be Wednesday - Friday of this week, 
and ONLY Monday of next week.

STEAM Night:
Rescheduled for Tuesday, September 19th from 6:00 - 8:00.
If you paid for a Chick-Fil-A meal and are unable to attend, please let me know and we will refund your money.

Picture Retakes:
Rescheduled for Tuesday, September 19th.
Proofs are coming home today.  If your child was absent on picture day, or they would like to have their picture taken again, please send in a handwritten note on Tuesday stating you'd like them to have another picture taken.  

Character Day:
Today RBES is recognizing National Character Day.  In both blocks we talked about empathy.  We watched a video, were given different situations and talked about how people would feel in those situations, and read a book about empathy.  Please ask your child about this today!  I think it was a very valuable activity and one that can be carried into all aspects of our lives!

- Develop a model based on observations to describe the repeating pattern of the phase of the moon (new, crescent, quarter, gibbous, and full)

Block 1 took the summative today and will make corrections to it tomorrow.

Block 2 will take it on Friday, September 15th and make corrections to it on Monday, September 18th.

We will be looking in different books to discover similarities and differences between explorers. We will also be watching videos, reading passages, and having class discussions to learn about obstacles, reasons, and conflicts that occurred during explorations.

NBT.2:  Compare two multi-digit numbers based on meanings of the digits in each place, using >, =, and < symbols to record the results of comparisons.
NBT.3:  Use place value understanding to round multi-digit whole numbers to any place value.
NBT.4:  Fluently add and subtract multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm.

The goal is to take the unit summative assessment this Friday, 9/8.  However, please know this could be subject to change a the week progresses.  Depending on observations of class work/small group work, the summative may be moved to Monday of next week.

We are also nearing the end of our unit on the solar system. The goal is to take the unit summative on Friday, 9/8. Like math, this may be subject to change. A study guide has been sent home (with block 2...block 1 will get their study guide tomorrow morning!) and students should be looking over this nightly.
